For booked customers

What to expect during your bathroom remodel.

Thank you for choosing Kaja Construction. Here's how your project will actually run — the schedule, the decisions we'll ask you to make, and what we need from you along the way.

The short version

Six things to know before we start.

The rest of this page has the detail. If you read nothing else, read these.

We're on site Monday–Friday, often Saturdays, generally 9 AM–5 PM
The bathroom being remodeled is out of service the whole project
Main household water is never off more than 2–3 hours at a time
Please check the work at least once a day
On-site questions go to the crew that day
Billing questions go to 313-799-3740

Your decisions

Choices that are yours to make.

During the project our team will ask for your input on these. They come up as the work reaches them — often on the day they need to happen — so thinking them through early keeps your project moving. Most of them land during tile work, which is the stretch where being reachable matters most.

Tile pattern & layout

How your tile is laid out — straight, offset, herringbone, and where the pattern starts and stops. Once tile is set, changing the layout means taking it back off.

Grout color

It changes the whole look. A contrasting grout shows off the pattern; a matching one lets the tile read as one surface.

Shower head height

Set during rough-in, before the walls close up. Worth thinking about based on who actually uses the shower.

Bath hardware placement

Where towel bars, hooks and the paper holder land — easiest to get right before tile and backing go in.

Shower niche placement

If your project includes one: where the recessed shelf sits, and how it lines up with your tile pattern.

Trim colors & details

Trim colors and the small project-specific choices that come up once the space starts taking shape.

How it runs

Your project, phase by phase.

A standard bathroom remodel moves through these stages, in this order.

1

Day one

You'll review the full scope with your Project Lead. We shut off water to the bathroom, protect the surrounding floors and begin demolition.

2

Rough-in

Plumbing, drains and the related behind-the-wall work.

3

Waterproofing

Your tub is set or the walk-in shower is prepped — including the Schluter® waterproofing that everything else depends on.

4

Tile

Tile installation. This is when most design decisions come up, so it's the most important stretch to be reachable.

5

Grout & fit-out

Grouting and cleanup, vanity plumbing adjustments, and electrical and light replacement.

6

Final

Final cleanup and fixture installation — then it's yours again.

Access & schedule

When we're there, and what the days look like.

Once your project begins we'll need access Monday through Friday, and often Saturdays, generally between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

The first day often starts later than usual — material pickup, trailer transport or moving tools from another site. We generally work a project consecutively, but expect some shorter days and schedule changes along the way.

If permits are required, the project is completed in phases around the required inspections, and will take significantly longer.

Day one may start late — that's normal
Permitted jobs run in phases and take longer

Staying in the loop

Please look at the work once a day.

We ask every customer to check progress at least once per day. If something looks off or you have a question, raise it with the crew on site that day — especially during tile installation. Catching something the same day is easy. Catching it a week later usually isn't.

Technical and timeline questions are best answered by the crew doing the work. For anything they can't resolve, ask your Project Lead or call or text 313-799-3740.

Payments

Our payment schedule.

50% of the remaining balance is due after the first day of work. The final balance is due on the final day of the project.

You can pay online, call the office, or stop by the showroom. Paying by check? Simply hand it in a closed envelope to your Project Lead on site.

One thing we keep simple for everyone: no pricing or billing is discussed with the on-site crew. For anything billing-related, call or text 313-799-3740.

Scope & changes

Your invoice is the source of truth.

Your scope is reviewed with the crew before work starts, and will be completed as agreed upon in your invoice. If anything needs to change during the project, we'll communicate it to you.

If you're ever unsure whether something is included, your invoice is the reference — please check it there first.

Honest expectations

A remodel isn't an exact science.

Your installers specialize in bathrooms and do this every day. Even so, a remodel has a lot of moving parts and occasionally uncovers conditions nobody could see beforehand. These are the things that can come up:

Grout line variations
Walls that are not perfectly plumb
Subfloor leveling — we don't typically re-level subfloors
Challenges connecting to existing or older plumbing
Difficult tile cuts
Tile shade variations — we don't sort tile by shade during layout

One more thing

Partial remodels meet the old bathroom somewhere.

On partial projects — a shower-only remodel, for example — there may be visible transitions where existing flooring or fixtures meet the new work. It's worth picturing that up front rather than on the last day.

Perfection isn't always possible, and we'd rather say that now than pretend otherwise. Our goal is the best possible result, and our team will work with you throughout to address concerns. If you run into any issue, talk to your Project Lead or call or text 313-799-3740.
