Tub to Shower Conversion

Tub to shower conversions, built in real tile.

Swap the tub you never use for a walk-in shower — taken out to the studs, waterproofed with Schluter and tiled the way you want. Kaja crews build them across Livonia, Ann Arbor and Wayne, Oakland and Washtenaw counties.

Why people convert

A shower you'll use every day, in the space the tub took up.

A conversion replaces a tub that rarely gets a bath with a walk-in shower where the tub was — no more stepping over a tub wall, and real tile instead of a tired surround.

Tub and surround removed to the studs
Schluter waterproofing, flood-tested
Real tile you choose — not a plastic liner
Curb or curbless entry
Niche or bench if you want one
The same crew from start to finish

Tub to shower conversion

A dated tub surround became a clean walk-in shower with white marble-look walls, a navy vanity, black fixtures and a lighted mirror.

How we build it

From tub to tiled shower, step by step.

1

The tub comes out

The old tub, surround and any glass come out down to the studs, so nothing old is left behind the new shower.

2

Plumbing set for a shower

The drain and shower valve are set for the new shower. Moving them is possible and adds labour.

3

Tray, curb or curbless

A sloped Schluter® tray and integrated drain go in, with a curb or a curbless entry — your choice.

4

Waterproofed and flood-tested

A bonded Schluter membrane covers the walls and floor, seams and corners sealed. We fill the pan and prove it holds water before any tile goes on.

5

Tile, fixtures and glass

Real tile you choose, new fixtures and glass — plus a niche or bench if you want one.

Curb or curbless

Two ways in, built on the same waterproofing.

Shower with a curb

A tiled curb at the entry holds the water in. Built on a Schluter tray and curb, waterproofed and flood-tested like every shower we build.

Curbless (zero-entry)

Nothing to step over at the entry. Building a curbless or zero-entry shower adds labour, which is one of the things that moves the price.

What it costs

Most conversions land between $9,000 – $13,000.

A tub to shower conversion is priced as a shower-area remodel — the same range as in our bathroom remodel cost guide. Paint and glass shower doors are quoted separately. Size, tile choice, a curbless entry and any plumbing moves set where you land; the estimate is free and you approve the number before we start.

Shower size drives most of the cost

Tile vs. a liner

Why we don't glue a plastic liner over your old tub.

One-day companies glue and caulk an acrylic liner over what's already there, so the old walls — and anything behind them — stay put. We take it all out and build a real tile shower on a waterproofing system. See the full tile vs. one-day bath comparison.

Old walls removed, not covered
Waterproofing built behind the tile
Any tile, niche or glass you want
Full bathrooms run about two weeks; a conversion is less

Conversion questions

Quick answers before your estimate.

How much does a tub to shower conversion cost?

It's priced as a shower-area remodel, and in 2026 most land between $9,000 and $13,000. Paint and glass shower doors are quoted separately. Size, tile choice, a curbless entry and any plumbing moves set where you land — the free estimate sets your real price, and you approve it before we start.

How long does a tub to shower conversion take?

Less time than a full bathroom, which runs about two weeks from demo to done. You'll get the schedule at your estimate, and the same crew stays on your job from start to finish.

Can the new shower go where the tub was?

Yes — that's what a conversion is. Moving the drain or the shower valve is possible too; it adds labour, so it's one of the things that moves the price.

Should I choose a curbless shower or one with a curb?

Either works with our Schluter system. A curbless or zero-entry shower adds labour, which is one of the things that moves the price. We'll walk you through both at the estimate.

Why tile instead of an acrylic shower liner?

An acrylic liner is glued and caulked over what's already there, so the old walls — and any problems behind them — stay in place. We take the tub and surround out, waterproof the new shower with Schluter, flood-test it, and then set real tile you choose.

Can you keep my tub and just redo the walls?

Yes. Tub remodeling is one of our services — new tile and Schluter waterproofing around the tub — and it's priced in the same shower-area range as a conversion.
